Oil Viscosity Rates Hot and Cold Flow

Motor oil must flow to protect engine parts. The rate of oil flow depends on its thickness or viscosity. The higher the viscosity, the slower it flows. Engines need a fast flow for cold weather and a slower flow for hot weather. The motor oil label presents the rating as the cold flow number, the letter W, and the warm flow number. For example, 10 W 30 is a popular type of motor oil.
