Engine coolant runs throughout your engine to cool things down or to heat things up. The coolant is designed as a heat absorber and gasket moisturizer. Water will absorb the heat but will break down. The coolant lasts longer, absorbs heat more evenly, and protects gaskets and piping better than water.

When you notice that your coolant level keeps dropping after topping it off, there is an obvious leak in the system. There are several places to check. One is the head gasket which will require a considerable cost to fix. Another place to check is the heater core. The culprit that most often shows is a hose leak somewhere along the line. A pressure check by your mechanic will show you where the leak has formed.

At BMW of Cape Cod, we check your coolant pressure during every oil change.
