BMW X5 vs. BMW iX: Luxury SUV or All-Electric SUV?

The BMW X5 and BMW iX are similar in size and luxury, but they fit very different driving lives. This comparison lays out powertrains, range, charging, passenger room, cargo, and towing so you can decide which one matches how you actually drive on and off Cape Cod.

Should I choose a BMW X5 or an all-electric BMW iX?

Choose the BMW X5 if you tow heavier loads (up to 7,200 lbs on properly equipped gas models), take frequent long drives where you would rather not plan charging stops, or want a plug-in hybrid option. The X5 xDrive50e offers roughly 38 miles of EPA-rated electric range before its gas engine takes over.

Choose the BMW iX if you can charge at home, your typical driving fits comfortably within its EPA-estimated range of about 303 to 364 miles depending on version, and you want quiet, instant electric performance with no gasoline stops.

Availability note: BMW is ending U.S. allocation of the iX after the 2026 model year. If the iX is your choice, you are shopping remaining new and pre-owned inventory. BMW's next electric SUV is the new BMW iX3.

How the Powertrains Differ

The biggest difference between these two SUVs is not size or luxury. It is how they are fueled, and that shapes almost every other trade-off.

BMW X5

Gas and Plug-in Hybrid Flexibility

The X5 offers the widest powertrain range of any BMW SUV. The 40i models use a turbocharged inline-6 with mild-hybrid assistance. The xDrive50e plug-in hybrid lets you run short errands on electricity and switch to gasoline for longer trips. The M60i and X5 M Competition add V8 performance.

BMW iX

All-Electric, Built as an EV

The iX was designed from the start as an electric vehicle. Every version uses two electric motors for all-wheel drive, delivering instant torque and a very quiet cabin. There is no engine to maintain, and most charging happens overnight at home.

Plug-in Hybrid Middle Ground

The X5 xDrive50e

If you like the idea of electric driving but are not ready to rely on charging, the X5 xDrive50e covers many local round trips on electricity while keeping gasoline range for longer drives. Our BMW electric vs. plug-in hybrid guide explains this choice in more detail.

Range, Charging, and Your Trip Patterns

Think about a normal week and a normal month, not your longest trip of the year.

Mostly Local Driving

Commutes between Cape towns, school runs, and errands are well within the iX's range, and a home Level 2 charger (240-volt) can refill the battery overnight. The X5 xDrive50e can also handle many of these trips on electricity alone.

Regular Off-Cape Trips

A round trip from Hyannis to Boston is roughly 140 miles, which fits within the iX's range on a full charge. Plan extra margin in winter, when cold temperatures can reduce electric range, and when driving at sustained highway speeds.

Frequent Long Road Trips

If you often drive several hundred miles in a day, the gas or plug-in hybrid X5 refuels in minutes. The iX can do long trips too, but you will plan DC fast-charging stops of roughly half an hour along the way.

Passenger Room, Cargo, and Towing

Passengers and Cargo

Both SUVs seat five in two rows. The iX offers slightly more maximum cargo space (up to 77.3 cu ft) than the X5 (up to 72.3 cu ft). The X5 adds a split tailgate that makes loading heavy items easier. Need a third row? Neither offers one; see the BMW SUV size guide for the three-row X7.

Towing Eligibility

For boats, campers, and larger trailers, the X5 is the stronger choice: properly equipped gas X5 models are rated up to 7,200 lbs. The iX is rated up to 3,500 lbs only when it has the available factory hitch, which not every iX includes. Towing also reduces electric range noticeably.

Local Expertise: Choosing Between X5 and iX on Cape Cod

Our team helps drivers across the Cape match these two SUVs to real routines. These are the questions we ask first:

  • Can you charge where you park? Home charging is what makes EV ownership easy. If you rent, park on the street, or split time at a seasonal home, a gas or plug-in hybrid X5 may fit better. Learn more on our BMW EV charging and benefits page.
  • Do you tow in summer? Trailering a boat to a ramp in Hyannis or Falmouth usually points to a properly equipped gas X5.
  • New or pre-owned? Because the iX is ending its U.S. run, pre-owned and BMW Certified inventory can be a smart way to get one. If you want BMW's newest electric technology, ask us about the BMW iX3.

Inventory changes daily, so the vehicles you see in our live search are the best guide to what is available right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the BMW iX bigger than the BMW X5?

They are close in size. Both are two-row, five-passenger midsize SUVs. BMW USA lists the iX at up to 77.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, versus up to 72.3 cubic feet for the gas X5 (71.2 cubic feet on the X5 xDrive50e).

Can the BMW iX tow a boat or trailer?

Some can. BMW began offering a factory tow hitch on the iX during 2025, and a properly equipped 2026 iX is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Not every iX has the hitch, so confirm the equipment on the specific vehicle. A properly equipped gas X5 is rated up to 7,200 pounds.

Is the BMW iX being discontinued?

In the U.S., yes. BMW has confirmed it is concluding U.S. allocation of the iX after the 2026 model year as it moves to its Neue Klasse electric models, starting with the new iX3. Remaining new iX models and pre-owned iX models can still be purchased while inventory lasts.

Does the BMW X5 have a third row?

Not in its current form. Earlier X5 generations offered an optional third row, but the current X5 is a five-seat SUV. If you need seven seats, the BMW X7 is the three-row option in the lineup.

Which is better for Cape Cod winters, the X5 or the iX?

Both can be excellent winter vehicles. Every iX has dual-motor xDrive all-wheel drive, and xDrive is standard on every X5 except the rear-wheel-drive X5 sDrive40i. Tires matter more than drivetrain in snow and ice, and cold weather can temporarily reduce electric range, so iX owners should plan charging accordingly.
