How BMW Certified Pre-Owned Coverage Works

Every BMW Certified vehicle comes with factory-backed coverage, but how much coverage a specific vehicle has left depends on its history. This guide separates what the BMW Certified program provides in general from the vehicle-specific details you should verify before you buy.

What coverage comes with a BMW Certified Pre-Owned vehicle?

Every BMW Certified vehicle is backed by the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Limited Protection Plan, which provides coverage for one year with unlimited miles after the original 4-year/50,000-mile BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires. BMW Certified owners also receive an additional three years of BMW Roadside Assistance, service loaners or alternative transportation during the protection plan, and one complimentary oil service. Because coverage is tied to the vehicle's original in-service date, always confirm the exact start and end dates for the specific vehicle you are considering.

How a Vehicle Earns BMW Certification

Eligibility

Age and Mileage

Vehicles must be five years old or newer, with more than 300 and fewer than 60,000 miles on the odometer.

Inspection

360-Degree Review

BMW-trained technicians review the CARFAX or AutoCheck report and maintenance history, then inspect tires, wheels, brakes, body, and mechanical systems, followed by a diagnostic check and road test.

Approval

Reconditioned and Signed Off

Vehicles are reconditioned with Genuine BMW Parts, though BMW notes that equivalent parts may be used in specific circumstances. Final approval comes from a BMW Certified technician, a service manager, and the BMW Certified manager.

What to Verify Before You Buy a BMW Certified Vehicle

General program terms are the same for every BMW Certified vehicle. These details are not, so ask for them in writing:

  1. Original in-service date: The date the vehicle was first delivered to its original owner. Coverage periods are measured from here.
  2. Current mileage: Determines whether any of the 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty remains.
  3. Protection plan dates: The exact start and end dates of the BMW Certified Limited Protection Plan for this VIN.
  4. Battery coverage dates: For all-electric vehicles, the high-voltage battery coverage end dates. For plug-in hybrids, ask how battery coverage applies to that vehicle.
  5. Open recalls: Check with our BMW recall lookup.
  6. Vehicle history report: Review ownership history and reported incidents for the specific VIN.
  7. Listing details: Confirm the warranty field and equipment shown on the listing. Our guide to reading a BMW vehicle listing explains each field.

Common Misunderstandings About BMW Certified Coverage

"My Coverage Starts the Day I Buy It"

Coverage is tied to the vehicle's original in-service date, not your purchase date. A newer, lower-mileage Certified vehicle can have considerably more coverage remaining than an older one of the same model.

"Certified Coverage Includes Maintenance and Wear"

The protection plan covers defects, not routine maintenance or normal wear items. Review BMW's exclusionary document for the full list, and ask about extended protection such as BMW's CPO Wrap, offered through BMW Financial Services, if you want coverage beyond the plan period.
